Road Warriors Fight To Win Conference Opener
ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/17/13)—The Concordia road warriors opened the conference schedule less than a day after returning from Washington and had to fight to come away with a 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 25-17, 25-22) win at Hamline.
The Cobbers returned home to Moorhead from their 2,880-mile round trip weekend to Tacoma, Wash. on Monday and then got back on a bus on Tuesday to take the 3-hour trip to St. Paul. Concordia learned their lesson from the lone loss of the weekend as they started fast against the Pipers and tried to keep the momentum going.
Concordia (9-4) took control of the first set after falling behind 4-2 and 8-5. The Cobbers rattled off nine of 13 points after they led 10-9 to take a commanding 19-13 lead.
The Cobbers were forced to chase the second set the entire contest as the Pipers never trailed and returned the 25-18 favor.
The third set was a duplicate of the first for CC as they crept away in the middle and then finished the 25-17 win with a 5-1 run at the end.
The fourth, and deciding, set came down to the final 11 points. With the score tied at 18-18, Concordia and Hamline traded points until the Cobbers led 22-21. CC then three of the next four points to record the 25-22 victory.
Concordia hit above .300 in the third and fourth sets and finished with a .229 attack percentage for the match. The Cobbers were led by Kynndyl Ross and Anna Skow-Anderson who both hit above .400 for the four sets. Ross had a team-high 13 kills and hit .406 while Skow-Anderon's .429 attack percentage was a team high and she finished with 10 kills. Ross also had a six blocks at the net. Senior Kayla Hampton was the biggest defensive force at the net for either team. She recorded seven bloxks and chipped in 10 kills. Mandy Mercil came away with 25 assists and Angie Waller helped out with a team-high 14 digs.
Concordia will finally get to return home for more than a day. The Cobbers will continue with their MIAC schedule when the host Bethel at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 as part of the annual Family Weekend celebration.
