Momentum Taken, Given And Then Snatched In Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/03/13)—Concordia took control of the momentum in the first two sets in their non-conference match with Mayville State then gave it away before finally snatching it one last time on their way to a 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 27-25) victory over the Comets in the 2013 home opener.

The Cobbers looked to be cruising to their fourth win in their first five matches of the season, building a 2-0 lead and containing the Comet offense. Concordia then stumbled in the third set and then had to stage a huge rally in the fourth set. CC fell behind 16-12 in the final set of the match but then won 10 of the next 16 points to tie the score at 22-22. An attack error and a Mayville kill put the Comets on the verge of tying the overall match at 2-2. CC responded with kills from Anna Skow-Anderson and Kayla Hampton to tie the set at 24-24. MSU put away the next point and then the Cobbers staved off their third set point before a pair of Comet attack errors gave CC the match win.

Concordia started the match by hitting above .125 in the first two sets but could only muster a .021 attack percentage in the third set. The Comet defense stymied CC's attack in the third set as they came away with 7.0 total team blocks. The Cobbers did just enough in the fourth frame as they were outhit .109-.100.

Cobber sophomore Olivia Wangensteen led all players with a season-high 19 kills. She also had 14 digs and had 21.0 points n the match. Hampton and Kelly Reed had nine winners each while senior Angie Waller had 24 digs and freshman Mandy Mercil came away with a match-high 37 assists.  Hampton also added three blocks and six digs.

Concordia will hit the road for a weekend tournament at Bethel University in Arden Hills. The Cobbers will play Nebraska Wesleyan and Luther on Friday and then Bethel and Martin Luther on Saturday.
