Frontliners Take Care Of Business

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/10/12)—Concordia took care of business on Wednesday as they rolled to a three-set sweep (25-19, 25-12, 25-15) over Macalester. The win is the third straight for the Cobbers and keeps CC locked in a tie for third place in the MIAC standings.

Concordia trailed for only two points during the match and that came at the very beginning of the first set. The Cobbers fell behind 1-0 and 2-1 but then settled in and went on a 6-2 run in the middle of the set and closed the opener out winning five of the final seven points. The second set was over after the first 10 points when Concordia bolted to a 15-5 stretch. The third set was more of the same. After going back-and-forth with the Scots for the first part of the set, the Cobbers closed out the match by winning 120f the final 18 points.

The win is the seventh in the last nine matches for the Cobbers and puts them one match ahead of the .500 mark at 9-8. CC is now 5-2 in conference play. Macalester loses for the fourth straight time and remains winless in conference play. The Scots are now 7-15 overall and 0-6 in the MIAC.

The story of the match was the ability of the Concordia front line players to continually put down attack chances. The Cobbers finished with a season-high .392 attack percentage. That was spurred on by a .522 kill percentage in set two.

Concordia had five different players record at least five kills in the three-set affair. Freshman Olivia Wangensteen had a match-high 11 kills and hit .476. Kynndyl Ross had nine kills and hit .667 while Kayla Hampton had seven winners and finished with an attack percentage of .538. Danelle Loomis and Shelby Bommersbach combined for 38 assists. Loomis had 24 helpers and Bommersbach added 14. Rachel Wiinanen posted a match-high 15 digs.     

The Cobbers will have the weekend off to celebrate Homecoming. CC will return to play when they host Mayville State on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in the final non-conference match of the year.
