40 Points Not Enough Against No.7 St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/02/12)—Concordia went back-and-forth with No.7-ranked St. Thomas for the first 40 points of their match in St. Paul but then watched the Tommies rattle off six straight points at the end of the first set to win 25-21 and then roll to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-16) win.

The Cobbers played the Tommies tough early but were unable to sustain the level throughout the entire match and lost for the second straight time. Concordia is now 6-8 in all matches and 4-2 in conference play. St. Thomas wins its 14th consecutive match and remains unbeaten in the MIAC. UST is now 19-1 in their first 20 matches of the season and ups its league mark to 6-0.

The offensive attack percentages reflected Concordia's success rate in the match. The Cobbers hit a solid .143 in the first set but were then held under .100 for the final two sets. CC hit .086 in the second and then .049 in the third to finish the match with a .090 attack percentage for the match. St. Thomas hit over .180 for all three sets and had a .203 team attack percentage for the three sets.

The Tommie defense was able to contain Cobber freshman Olivia Wangensteen. One match after recording a career-high 27 kills and 22 digs, Wangensteen was held to eight kills and eight digs. CC is now 1-5 when Wangensteen doesn't reach the double-digit kill mark in a match.

The Cobbers were led by sophomore outside hitter Kynndyl Ross who finished with nine kills. She also had a team-high .263 attack percentage for the match. Junior Angie Waller was a force at the net coming away with a career-high 10 total blocks and accounting for 10.0 points. Danelle Loomis had 15 assists and was one of four CC players with eight digs in the contest.

Concordia was done in by the St. Thomas frontline tandem of Kelly Foley and Paige Brimeyer. Foley had a match-high 13 kills and hit .320 while Brimeyer added 11 kills and came away with a match-high .455 attack percentage. Kaiti Wachter recorded 23 digs and Katie Maher had 25 assists.

The Cobbers will head out of conference when they play at Mayville State on Friday, Oct. 5 at Mayville State at 7 p.m. CC will then return home to host Macalester on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
