A Little Old, A Little New In Home-Opening Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/19/12)—Concordia showed off their "old school" and their "new school" as they eased past Bethel 3-1 (25-17, 25-10, 20-25, 25-14) in the 2012 home opener.

The Cobbers received a match-highs in kills and digs from newcomers Olivia Wangensteen and Angie Waller and seniors Danelle Loomis and Rachel Wiinanen both had stellar performances. Wangensteen finished with 20 kills while Waller recorded 18 digs. Veterans Loomis and Wiinanen put up 26 assists and 14 digs respectively.

The bookend quartet helped Concordia win their second straight match and remain perfect in the MIAC. CC is now 4-6 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC.

Concordia seized control of the match at the end of the opening set. Leading 21-18, the Cobbers went on a 4-0 run to win 25-18. CC then won 15 of the first 17 points in the second set and cruised to a 25-10 win. The Cobbers stumbled at the back end of the third set but then rebounded with a 9-0 run towards the start of the fourth set and claimed a 25-14 set win and a 3-1 victory in the match.

Wangensteen hit .444 for the match and helped the Cobbers come away with a .252 attack percentage. The CC defense limited the Royals to a .054 hitting percentage. Kelly Reed had seven blocks to lead the Concordia front row defense. Kynndyl Ross had one of the better two-way matches for CC. She came away with 11 kills and three blocks.

Bethel (9-5/0-2 MIAC) was led by Caitie Halle who had 15 kills. Rachel Bloom recorded a match-high 30 assists and Val Smith added 12 digs.

Concordia will hit the road for their next MIAC match. The Cobbers will play at St. Kate's on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.
