Sprinting Into The MIAC Championship

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/03/11)—Concordia needed only 62 minutes to advance to the MIAC playoff championship match as they swept St. Ben’s 25-13, 25-12, 25-22 in Moorhead on Tuesday. The Cobbers advance to the title match for the first time since 2006 and will host St. Thomas on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.

The win is the 18th straight win at home for the Cobbers. Concordia is 9-0 this season and had won nine straight coming into the year. CC is now 24-3 overall this year.

It was all about the Concordia front line players against St. Ben’s. Jenna Green, Katie Vohnoutka and Ashley Beseman combined for 32 kills – two more than the Blazer entire team put up on the night. Green had 15 kills and hit .342 while Vohnoutka had 11 winners and had a .320 attack percentage. Beseman was a perfect 6-for-6 at the net and also came away with two blocks.

The trio of seniors helped Concordia hit .320 for the match. It is the eighth time this season that the Cobbers have hit better than .300 in a match. They provided a wall at the net that limited the Blazers to a .062 attack percentage. CSB hit .182 in the first set but then dropped off to -.051 in the second set and .073 in the final set.

Green and Rachel Wiinanen both had 14 digs for the three sets. Amy Sykora had 33 assists and Alison Bruggeman added a match-high three service aces, five digs and two blocks.

St. Ben’s (18-12) did not have a player with more than eight kills in the match. Lexi Alm finished with a team-high eight kills. Chelsie Sobieck and Alex Rinde had seven winners each. Taya Kockelman had 15 assists and Chelsea Rachel had a team-high 15 digs.

Concordia and St. Thomas will square off for the second time in Moorhead on the year. The Cobbers swept the Tommies on Sept. 28. The winner of the CC/UST MIAC title match on Saturday will receive the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
