Cobbers Find Early-Season Success At Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/22/23)---The calendar might have showed the first meet of the season, but the Cobbers were in mid-year form at the Cobber Open.

Concordia recorded six event wins and multiple runner-up finishes as they showed early-season success.

Allyson Kangas and Peyton Selle led the Cobbers on Saturday. Both athletes recorded multiple event wins as they started their paths to the MIAC Conference Meet.

Kangas recorded wins in both throwing events. She was first in the shot put with a distance of 40-04.75. That mark was a foot farther than the next competitor and is the third farthest in the MIAC this season. Kangas backed up her victory in the shot put by putting up a distance of 50-07.50 in the weight throw. That mark was over 6-feet farther than any other athlete in the event, and is also the third best in the conference.

Selle started her quest for another MIAC multi-event championship by winning the high jump and long jump – and she also finished third in the 60-meter hurdles. Selle's winning mark in the high jump was 4-11.00. She claimed the title in the long jump with a mark of 16-02.50.

Selle finished off opening day by running a 9.62 in the hurdle sprint. Her time is No.5 on the league list this year.

Sophomore Drew Frolek and freshman Sophia Revoir stepped into the spotlight by also claiming event wins in the opener. Frolek crossed the line in a time of 5:31.41 to win the mile by just over 2-seconds against teammate Emily Rugloski. Rugloski would also go on to finish second in the 800 meters at 2:34.48.

Revoir claimed the victory in the 1000 meters with a time of 3:20.86 which was 9-seconds faster than the runner-up finisher.

Emily Rengo, running in her first collegiate meet, posted a pair of runner-up finishes in spring races. She sped to a time of 8.32 in the 60-meter dash and finished second in the event. She was only .05 of a second off the top time, and her mark is also tied for fourth fastest in the conference this season.

Rengo then clocked a 27.89 in the 200 meters to earn her second runner-up place. That time was only .16 of a second behind the winner and No.9 on the MIAC list.

Kyra Nichols started her senior season by finishing second in the triple jump. Her top distance on Saturday was 31-01.75 which is only 18 inches shy of a personal best.  

UP NEXT: Concordia will look to carry on its early-season success when they travel north to Grand Forks to compete in the UND Open on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 12 p.m.
