5 Cobbers Earn All-Region Honors

MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/21/21)---Concordia had five athletes earn U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Central All-Region honors for the 2021 outdoor season.

Josie Herrmann, Cayle Hovland and Jesse Middendorf all duplicated their All-Region award from the indoor season while Peyton Selle and Cal Wright earned All-Region honors for the first time in their careers.

To earn All-Region honors, an individual had to be in the Top 5 in their region in an event. Also, each of the members of a top-3 ranked relay team received All-Region honors.

Middendorf backed up his All-Region award in the indoor 800 meters by winning the 800 meters at the MIAC Outdoor Championship. He also broke the 33-year-old record in the outdoor 800 during the season. Middendorf's record-setting time of 1:51.27 came at the Ron Masanz Classic at MSU Moorhead on Apr. 30. That time would earn him a spot at the Division III Outdoor National Meet and also his second straight All-Region honor.

Wright earns his first-ever All-Region honor after a heartbreaking season that ended with a season-ending injury. He started the season on fire by posting top times in the conference in the 200 and 400 meters. His peak performance came on Apr. 10 at the St. John's Last-Minute Meet where he crossed the finish line in the 400 meters in a time of 48.64. That mark was the second fastest in school history and earned him the All-Region award in the 400. Unfortunately, Wright's season came to an end on Apr. 30 when he went down with a leg injury at the Ron Masanz Classic.

Hovland adds outdoor honors in the shot put to the All-Region award she won in the shot put during the indoor season. Hovland's top mark of the outdoor campaign came at the St. Ben's Last-Minute Meet on Apr. 10 when she posted a mark of 45-05. Hovland's season-best distance would earn her a spot at the DIII National Outdoor Meet. Hovland also qualified for nationals in the discus. She claimed that spot with her winning distance at the MIAC Meet where she went on to be name Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet.

Herrmann doubles up on her indoor 800-meter honor by earning the same award for the outdoor season. She also earned All-Region honors for the 1500 meters. Herrmann won both events at the MIAC Meet and both of her All-Region times came from that meet. Her award-winning time in the 800 meters was 2:11.67 which won the conference race by a full second and earned her a spot at nationals. Herrmann double up on her conference titles, All-Region honors and national meet entries by running a 4:33.94 in the 1500 meters.

Selle is the only Cobber first-year athlete to win outdoor All-Region honors. She had a breakout year in the heptathlon. Selle won the MIAC heptathlon championship with a score of 4,130 points and went on to better that mark at the North Central Multi-Event Meet. Selle's score of 4,265 points at North Central earned her the All-Region honor.
