MIAC Champs Try To Better Marks

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (5/20/21)---A pair of Concordia MIAC champions tried to improve their marks and qualify for the NCAA National Meet in the North Central Multi-Event and Wis.-La Crosse NCAA Final Qualifier meets.

Freshman Peyton Selle and junior Cayle Hovland were the only two Cobber athletes who traveled east after the conference meet for the annual "NCAA Qualifier" week. Selle was trying to improve her score, and qualify, for the heptathlon at North Central while Hovland was trying to improve her national-qualifying status in the discus and shot put.

Selle won the heptathlon at the MIAC Championship Meet in her first-ever conference multi-event on May 6-7. She was looking to get into the Top 20 of Division III to earn a spot at the national meet. Selle improved on her MIAC score as she finished the seven events with a total of 4,265 points which is a PR. Her total was 135 points better than her conference-winning total of 4,130.

Selle's total pushes her into the No.24 spot in the nation. She will have to wait until Sunday to find out if other athletes in the heptathlon declare for other events at the national meet which would move her up and possibly into a spot at the DIII Meet.

Hovland, who was named the MIAC Women's Outstanding Field Athlete on Wednesday, was looking to improve her national marks in two throwing events. Hovland entered the La Crosse meet with the No.15 best mark in the discus and was tied for 10th in the shot put.

Like the MIAC Meet, Hovland won the discus at the La Crosse NCAA Qualifier. She posted a distance of 145-09. That mark is just shy of the distance she posted at conference which will earn her a spot at the national meet.

Hovland finished off the qualifier on Thursday in the shot put. Her best distance on the day was 42-07.50 which was 1-06.75 short of her 3rd-place effort at the MIAC Meet. Her best mark of the year is 45-05 which came on Apr. 10 at the St. Ben's Last-Minute Meet.
