Undisputed Middle Distance Champion

ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/15/21)---If there was ever a doubt who the middle distance queen in the MIAC was before the MIAC Championship Meet, the argument was put to rest on Saturday when senior Josie Herrmann won both the 800 and 1500 meters and helped the Cobbers finish sixth in the final team standings.

Junior Cayle Hovland joined Herrmann on the winner's podium by capturing the crown in the discus. The pair led CC to 75 total team points which is the most by a Concordia team since the 2017 season when they finished with 108.3 points and were third.

Herrmann not only won both events, but also posted PR times in both races. She opened Day 2 of the conference meet by claiming the title in the 1500 meters. Herrmann made sure none of the other runners would have thoughts about claiming a win as she beat the runner-up finisher by almost a full 3-seconds. She won the race with a mark of 4:33.94 which is the 13th fastest in DIII this season and the third best in school history. Herrmann backed up her 1500-meter win by crossing the line in a time of 2:11.67 in the 800 meters which won the race by a full second. Her winning time is No.6 in Division III this year and the second fastest in school history.

Hovland earned her second MIAC All-Conference honor when she won the discus on Saturday. Hovland put up a distance of 146-10 in her very first attempt. That mark is a PR and No.14 in the nation this year. It is the fifth farthest in program history.

Hovland also earned team points, and All-Conference Honorable Mention honors, with a 6th-place finish in the hammer throw.

The Cobbers had three other track athletes, and a relay team, earn All-Conference Honorable Mention honors on Saturday.

Senior Meritt Miller ran a PR time in the 1500 meters which earned her a 6th-place finish. She clocked a 4:49.01 which bettered her previous best by 6.50 seconds. It was also the second time she broke the 5-minute barrier in her carrier – with the first coming in the prelims on Friday.

The other two MIAC honors were recorded in the hurdle events. Senior Carly Fornshell saved her best for last by running a PR in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles. She cleared every single hurdle and crossed the line in 1:06.62. That time was good for fourth place.

Freshman Peyton Selle capped her successful first conference meet, by finishing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. The MIAC heptathlon champion, Selle clocked a season-best time of 15.74 which bettered her time at the conference heptathlon meet by .18 of a second.

The Cobber 4x400-meter relay team of Maddie Guler, Fornshell, Selle and Herrmann closed out the meet with honorable mention honors when they ran a 4:03.66 and placed fourth.
