7 Event Wins + Top 10 Marks = Sweep

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/13/21)---A little bit of this and a little bit of that added up to a whole lot of something for Concordia as they recorded seven event wins on their way to sweeping the home opener against Southwest Minnesota St. and Valley City St.

Cayle Hovland and Josie Herrmann led the way for the Cobbers who beat SMSU 93-54 and downed VCSU 100-62. Hovland recorded Top 5 program marks in both the shot put and weight throw while Herrmann cruised to wins in the 600 and 800 meters.

Hovland was one of the seven individual event winners for CC. She won the weight throw with a mark of 52-01. That distance is a personal best and the second farthest in school history. The Cobber school record is 54-04.00 which was set in 1999 by Laura Utke. Hovland's betters her previous PR of 50-06.25 which set posted in the season opener at NDSU.

Hovland also came through with a Top 5 distance in the shot put. She finished second in the event with a mark of 43-09.75. Her previous best was 43-06 which came in 1999.

Hovland now owns the top mark in the conference in the shot put and is second in the weight throw. She is also fifth in Divison III in the shot put and 16th in the weight throw.

Hovland's throw teammate Jacey Schlosser continues to have a successful sophomore season. She was third in both the shot put and weight throw and recorded a PR of 45-03.50 in the weight throw. Schlosser is in the Top 9 of the MIAC in both throw events.

Herrmann put up easy wins in the 600 and 800 on Saturday. She crossed the line in a time of 1:39.29 in the 600 and in 2:20.07 in the 800. It was the first 600 of the season for Herrmann and her time is the fastest in the MIAC this year. She also owns the top mark in the 800. Herrmann's fastest time in the 800 on the season is the 2:17.22 which came at the season opener two weeks ago. That mark is the sixth best in all of DIII.

Concordia also received track event wins from Jenna LaFave in the 300 meters and Meritt Miller in the 3000. LaFave's winning time of 47.43 in the 300 is a personal best. Miller competed in both the mile and 3K. She won the 3K in a time of 11:16.55 and was second in the mile at 5:31.89. Her time in the mile is No.3 on the conference list this year.

Freshman Sierra Ramberg continues to post PR's in the 60-meter dash in her first collegiate season. In the opener at NDSU, Ramberg clocked an 8.26 and on Saturday she dropped that time to 8.23. That is No.10 on the school's all-time list and ups her to No.9 in the MIAC this year.

Carly Fornshell, Isabel Fredrickson and Nicole Lilleberg had runner-up finishes in track events. Fornshell was second in the 600 (1:44.14), Fredrickson was runner-up in the 800 (2:33.26) and Lilleberg was second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.93).

Lilleberg was also one of three winners in field events for Marv Roeske's crew. She recorded the "W" in the triple jump with a distance of 31-09.75. That mark is just outside the Top 10 of the MIAC this year.

Besides Lilleberg and Hovland, the other field win came from freshman Peyton Selle who won the high jump with a height of 4-11.00. Selle had a pair of third-place finishes in tow other events – both with personal best marks. She finished with a distance of 15-03.25 in the long jump and had a time of 9.99 in the 60-meter hurdles.

UP NEXT: Concordia will look to continue its success in 2021 when they host their second straight dual meet. The Cobbers will face city rival MSU Moorhead on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m.
