Throwers Net Big Points On MIAC Day 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/10/19)--- Concordia once again turned into Throwers University on the first day of the MIAC Championship Meet as the Cobbers scored 30 team points in two throwing events to help push the team into third place after Friday's events.

Concordia placed four athletes in the Top 6 in the shot put and had Jenna Stilwell finish second in the javelin to score 30 of their 34 team points on Day 1. The Cobbers trail second-place St. Olaf by six points and are ahead of fourth-place Hamline by three points heading into the final day of the outdoor meet at St. Thomas.

The freshmen throw trio of Allyson Kangas, Jacey Schlosser and Cayle Hovland served notice to the rest of the MIAC that Concordia will be at the top of the shot put chart for several more years. Kangas finished second in the shot put with a personal best throw of 41-05.25. Schlosser followed closely behind with a distance of 40-11.00 and Hovland finished off the 2-3-4 Cobber finish by posting a mark of 40-07.75. Junior Kelsey Rajewsky gave Concordia a DIII-best four athletes above 40 feet as she posted a personal-best distance of 40-03.25 which was good for sixth place.

The quartet of Cobbers accounted for 22 of the team's 34 points on the day.

The feel good story of the day belonged to Stilwell who has been sidelined that past two years by knee injuries and persevered to put up a second-place finish in the javelin. Stilwell shook off the bad luck and uncorked a throw of 120-02. It was her best mark in over two years and helped the team earn eight key points. Stilwell qualified for the finals with a throw of 113-00 in the prelims.

The other individual team points for the Cobbers came from juniors Kara Andersen and Miriah Forness. Andersen clocked her first sub 40-minute 10,000 meter run and finished eight while Forness tied her PR in the pole vault and placed seventh.

Andersen crossed the line in a time of 39.25 which was over a minute faster than her previous best time in the event. Forness cleared the bar at 10-04 which tied her season best and is the sixth best in school history.

Concordia also had several other athletes qualify for the finals in running events on Saturday. Zahra Banks ran a 12.91 and was the final qualifier for the finals in the 100-meter dash. Banks then missed out on the finals of the 200 meters by a mere .07 of a second. Josie Herrmann and Isabel Fredrickson both qualified for the finals in the 800 meters. Hermann and Fredrickson finished 5-6 in the prelims. Herrmann crossed the line in a time of 2:19.53 and Fredrickson was close behind at 2:19.86. Herrmann will also get a chance to score team points in the finals of the 1500 meters where she qualified with a time of 4:55.06.

Forness was the other finals qualifier for CC. She clocked a 1:07.42 in the 400-meter hurdles and was sixth in the event.

Concordia will finish off the MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet at St. Thomas on Saturday, May 11 beginning at 2 p.m.
