Herrmann & Cobbers Shine At The Wire

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/23/19)--- Josie Herrmann was in the middle of the spotlight for the second straight day at the MIAC Championship Meet. Hermann, who placed second in the 800 meters on Friday, did that finish one better by using a monster kick to win the 1000 meters.

Herrmann led a group of three Concordia athletes who posted Top 3 finishes on the final day of the conference meet as they helped the Cobbers finish in seventh place in the final team standings. CC ended the meet with 57 total team points which was only 2.5 points away from a Top 5 finish.

The overall total of 57 is 36 more than last year when they finished in 11th place. The seventh-place finish is the highest for Concordia since they placed third overall in 2016.

Hermann becomes the first Concordia track athlete to win an event at the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet since the 2008 season when Hailey Brenden won the 3000 meters.

Herrmann trailed for almost the entire race until she found another gear on the last lap and reeled in the leader and passed her in the final meters of the race. Herrmann won the 1000 meters by a mere .15 of a second over the athlete who was seeded first heading into the meet.

Herrmann's finishing time was 3:01.85 which is the second fastest time in school history.

Herrmann was the only non-shot put athlete to finish in the Top 3 of an event on Day 2. The Cobber throw crew led by coach Brandt Berghuis posted three finishers in the Top 7 of the event – and all three were freshmen.

Cayle Hovland led the trio of shot put stars with a runner-up finish. She posted a distance of 42-06 on her second attempt in the prelims which wound up being her best mark of the day. She finished less than three inches ahead of her teammate Jacey Schlosser who only had one non-foul attempt in the finals and made it count with a distance of 41-09.25. That mark came on her fifth, of six tries, in the event and was a personal best.

Allyson Kangas was the third member of the crew to finish in the Top 7 of the shot put. She ended with a distance of 39-02.25 which was good for seventh place and two critical team points.   

At the end of the event the shot put crew recorded 16 points for the Cobber team total.           

The other team-scoring individual event of the day came in the 600 meters where junior Miriah Forness legged out a time of 1:41.54 which is a personal best time and earned her eighth place in the race.

Concordia's top relay finish came in the very last race of the day where the quartet of Isabel Fredrickson, Carly Fornshell, Forness and Herrmann clocked a 4:07.73 in the 4x400-meter relay and finished in fourth place. Their time was a season best and earned the team five points to bring the final total to 57.

UP NEXT: Concordia will take a select group of individuals to the Wartburg (Iowa) NCAA Qualifier Meet on Saturday, Mar. 2 in hopes of improving on marks to gain entry to the NCAA National Meet on Mar. 8-9 in Boston, Mass.
