Hovland Breaks Record In Opener

SIOUX CUTY, Iowa (4/12/18)---Senior Bailey Hovland wasted little time in getting used to the outdoor season. In the first meet of the delayed season, Hovland broke her own school record in the hammer throw at the weather shortened Sioux City Relays.

Hovland recorded a distance of 170-01 and finished sixth in the hammer throw in a meet that was predominantly NCAA Division I and II athletes. Hovland's finishing distance eclipsed her old mark of 166-04 which she set last season.

Hovland's distance in the very first outdoor meet is the top mark in the MIAC this season and tied for fifth best in all of Division III this season.

The Sioux City Relays was originally scheduled to take place over two days on Apr. 12-13 but was cut short due to the impending winter storms forecasted throughout Iowa and Minnesota.

Hovland also took advantage of the first day of the meet to get in her first discus competition of the year. She came away with a final distance of 124-08 and finished 17th at the meet. Her mark puts her in the No.4 spot in the MIAC's performance list for this season.

Concordia had three other athletes post MIAC Top 15 marks at the meet. Sophomore Kelsey Rajewsky also came up with Top 15 marks in the hammer throw and discus in the first competition of the year. She posted a distance of 121-10 in the hammer throw which is ninth farthest in the MIAC this year and then tossed the discus 103-02 which is No.11 on the MIAC list this year.

Freshman Corrie Ethan was the only other field athlete to jump into the conference Top 15. She went 32-03 in the triple jump and is 12th in the MIAC this year.

Josie Hermann had a pair of Top 15 marks in track events. She raced to a time of 27.90 in the 200 meters and clocked a 1:01.76 in the 400 meters. Hermann is now 13th in the 200 meters and ninth in the 400 meters.

The other Cobber notable performance at the opener came from junior Tarja Nelsen who broke the 20-minute mark for the first time in her career in the 5000 meters by clocking a 19:59.38.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a 12=day break before hosting the annual Cobber Twilight Meet on Tuesday, Apr. 24.
