8 Cobbers Post Top 10 Finishes At MIAC

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/24/18)---Like she has done all indoor season long, senior thrower Bailey Hovland led the Cobbers at an indoor meet.

Hovland scored team points in both the weight throw and shot put and helped Concordia to an 11th-place finish at the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet.

Hovland was one of eight Concordia athletes to record a Top 10 individual event finish at the meet.

Hovland started her final indoor conference competition by placing second in the weight throw with a distance of 48-02.75. Her mark was good for a runner-up finish in the event. It marked the second straight conference meet where she has earned All-Conference honors for finishing in the Top 3 of an event. Last spring she won the hammer throw and was third in the discus at the MIAC Outdoor Meet.

Hovland ended the meet on Day 2 by just missing out on All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in the shot put. Hovland was in seventh place with a mark of 36-09.50 which came on her fifth, of six, attempts.

The heir apparent to take over as the top Cobber thrower next year is sophomore Kelsey Rajewsky. Rajewsky failed to qualify for the finals in the weight throw on Friday but then rallied to earn her first-ever All-Conference Honorable Mention honor as she bested Hovland by a single spot in the shot put. Rajewsky placed sixth in the event with a distance of 37-06.75 which passed by her season best mark by two inches.

The surprise of the meet for the Cobbers came on Thursday when Marissa Andersen and Katie Jobe both earned team points in the pentathlon. Andersen scored a career-high 2,800 points in the event which was good for fourth place and All-Conference Honorable Mention honors.

Jobe also scored a personal best with 2,656 points and was eighth in the event and scored a single team point.

The Concordia field athletes had two other Top 10 finishes at the meet. Junior Shelby Gelinske was ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 33-06.75 and senior Vanessa Johnson cleared 5-01.75 and was 10th in the high jump.

The two Top 10 finishes on the track side came courtesy of the feet of freshman Josie Herrmann and senior Maria West. Herrmann was seventh in the 600 meters with a career-best time of 1:40.14. Her finishing time was over a full second faster than her previous season best which came at the Bison Open on Feb. 3.

West had a season-best time in the 800 meters and was the No.10 runner in the event. It marked the second straight year she has finished 10th in the event at the conference meet.  West crossed the line in a time of 2:23.41 which was her fastest of the year by over a full second.

The other Cobber highlight came from Kara Andersen who posted the No.10 all-time mark in school history in the 5000 meters with a time of 18:57.64.
