Peterson Adds Indoor All-American

Peterson Adds Indoor All-American

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (3/11/17)--- You can now add indoor All-American to the resume of senior Emma Peterson. Peterson finished in a tie for fourth place in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championship Meet to earn her second All-American honor.

Peterson earned her first-ever All-American honor at last spring's NCAA Outdoor Championship Meet when she finished seventh in the high jump. She became the first Cobber to earn All-American honors at an indoor meet since 2015 when Cherae Reeves won the national championship in the shot put.

Peterson becomes the third Cobber athlete to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championship Meet since 2010 and she earns the fifth indoor All-American honor since 2010. Cherae Reeves won three indoor All-American honors in 2013, 2014 and 2015 ans Leah Kay earned an All-American award at the NCAA Indoor Meet in 2010.

Peterson started her All-American performance by passing until the height of 5-03.00. She cleared that height on her first attempt. The bar was then moved up to 5-05.00 and Peterson missed on her very first attempt. That would be her only miss until 5-07.75.

Peterson cleared 5-05 on her second try which put her in the Top 11 of the event. She then earned her All-American award by going over the bar at 5-06.50 in her very first attempt.

After the dust cleared at the 5-06.50 mark there were still 11 athletes left in the competition. However, due to only missing one attempt at the lower heights Peterson was assured of a Top 8 finish as long as eight other athletes didn't clear a better height than Peterson.

Peterson was never able to get over the bar at 5-07.75 – the height she won the MIAC championship with – and had to wait until all the athletes had completed the round. Only two athletes cleared the bar at 5-07.75 which pushed Peterson into a tie for fourth place and earned her the All-American award.
