A Unanimous Award Winner

MOORHEAD, Minn. (3/02/17)---Of all the awards handed out by the MIAC during the winter season in 2017 the Most Outstanding Field Athlete honor for the conference indoor meet might have been the least competitive.

Concordia senior Emma Peterson used her two MIAC record performances at last weekend's MIAC Indoor Championship Meet to earn Outstanding Field Athlete honors.

It is the first time in her career that Peterson has won of the Top 3 honors at a conference championship meet. The last Concordia athlete to earn Most Outstanding Athlete honors was Heather Schuster when she was named the Outstanding Track Athlete at the 2007 MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet.

Peterson earned the award by winning both the triple jump and high jump at the MIAC Indoor Meet and doing so in record-breaking fashion.

She started her unbelievable meet by recording a distance of 38-09.75 in the prelims. Her distance not only broke the Cobber school record but it was also a new meet record breaking the old mark of 38-06.75 set back in 2005. Peterson broke the old school record which was identical to the MIAC Meet mark and set by Hilary Thompson in 2014.

Peterson's winning distance is currently the sixth best in all of NCAA Division III.

Peterson then came back for an encore performance in the high jump on Saturday. She won the high jump competition by over four inches when she cleared the bar at 5-07.75. That height broke the old MIAC record of 5-06.50 set back in 2012.

Not only did Peterson's winning mark in the high jump break the MIAC record but it also bettered the Cobber school record of 5-07.00 which she set on Feb. 4 at the Bison Open. Peterson continues to up the bar for both her indoor and outdoor marks.  She also holds the outdoor school record in the jump at 5-07.00.

Peterson's conference winning height is the fourth best in Division III this year.

Peterson will now set her sights on earning another All-American honor as she will compete at the NCAA Division III National Indoor Meet in both events on Mar. 10-11 at North Central College in Naperville, Ill.
