Peterson Earns MIAC Weekly Honors

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/20/16)—Concordia junior Emma Peterson was named the MIAC Field Athlete of the Week after breaking the school record in the high jump on Saturday.

Peterson becomes the first Cobber athlete to earn the conference weekly honor for the outdoor season. Teammate Vanessa Johnson earned the award during the indoor season on Feb. 17. It is also the first time in her career that Peterson has won MIAC Athlete of the Week accolades.

Peterson had a career day at the Lee Krough Gustavus Invite as she cleared 5-07.25 which bettered the old school record of 5-07.00 set by Alyssa Deutschmann back in 2011.

Peterson's mark is also tied for the second best in all of Division III this season and should qualify her for the NCAA National Outdoor Meet. The top 22 athletes in each event qualify for nationals. Last year Peterson's height would have been good for fourth place at the NCA Meet.

In addition to having one of the two best marks in DIII, Peterson also has the top mark in the MIAC this season. She won the high jump at the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet this season with a height of 5-04.25. Peterson also earned All-Conference honors in the high jump at last year's conference outdoor meet by finishing in a tie for second place. Peterson currently has a streak of three straight All-Conference honors in the high jump as she placed third at the 2015 MIAC Indoor Meet held at Concordia.

In addition to her record-setting height in the high jump on Saturday, Peterson also claimed second place in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:04.46 is the fastest time in the MIAC this season and currently No.28 on the list of Division III times this season.

Peterson will be looking to continue her success in the outdoor season when she competes with the rest of the Cobbers at the Lyle Hokanson Classic held at North Dakota State on Saturday, Apr. 23.
