Peterson, Johnson And Forness Oh My!

ST. PETER, Minn. (4/16/16)— Emma Peterson, Olivia Johnson and Mikayla Forness all posted top 7 marks in Division III at the Lee Krough Gustavus Invitational.

Peterson led the Cobber trio as she broke the school record in the high jump and posted one of the 15 fastest times in the nation in the 400-meter hurdles.

Peterson was a part of a Cobber team that posted 17 top 7 finishes at a meet that was attended by teams from the MIAC, UMAC and IIAC.

The Peterson, Johnson and Forness trio also claimed the only event wins at the meet for Concordia. While Peterson won the high jump, Johnson claimed victory in the shot put and Forness was victorious in the javelin.

Peterson won the high jump with a height of 5-07.25. That ties for the best mark in all of Division III this year and bettered the old school record of 5-07 set by Alysaa Deutschmann back in 2011. What makes the height even more remarkable is that it was Peterson's first outdoor meet of the season. Peterson's previous college best was 5-04.25.   

Peterson would finish off her career day by posting a time of 1:04.46 in the 400-meter hurdles. That was good for second place, the fastest by any DIII athlete at the meet, and the 13th fastest in the nation this year.

Johnson also had a stellar day in St. Peter. She won the shot put, finished second in the javelin and placed sixth in the hammer throw.  All three of her top distances in each event were season bests for Johnson. She won the shot put with a mark of 45-04.50 which is the seventh best in Division III this year. Her second-place finish in the javelin came courtesy of a throw of 135-04 which is the 11th best in Division III and second farthest in the MIAC – behind teammate Forness.

Johnson completed her top 7 trifecta by launching the hammer 155-02 which is the farthest in the MIAC this season and fourth farthest in school history.

Forness won the javelin with a distance of 142-11. That mark is also the seventh best in the nation this season. It beat her previous season best by 10 feet and is also the third farthest in school history.

Forness also had a top 7 finish in the 400-meter hurdles. She placed fifth in the event with a time of 1:05.34. That mark is the third fastest in the MIAC this season and No.9 on the school's all-time list.

Forness and Johnson helped the Cobbers go 1-2-3 in the javelin at the meet. Freshman Jenna Stilwell was right behind Forness and Johnson in third place. She finished with a distance of 125-04. Stilwell was also seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a college-best time of 15.90.

The other top field event for CC was the high jump where Peterson jumped out of her shoes to win the event. Sophomore Vanessa Johnson was fourth at 5-05.25 and Anna Skow-Anderson was sixth at 5-01.25. Johnson's mark is her season best and in the top 15 of the nation this year.

Senior Ashley Thompson continues her breakout season in the discus. She was the top Division III finisher in the event with a third-place finish at 126-06. Thompson was also fifth in the shot put with a season-best distance of 38-04.25.

Sophomore Hannah Lundstrom, who had been in the spotlight at the end of the indoor season and start of the outdoor season posted two top 6 finishes in the sprints. She was third in the 100-meter dash at 12.47 and then placed sixth in the 200-meter dash at 25.71. Her time in the 100 meters is the fastest in the MIAC this season while her 200 time was the top mark by any DIII athlete at the meet. She also has the fastest time in the MIAC in the 200 this year at 25.22 which she set out in California.        

WHAT'S NEXT
Concordia will stay in town for the next two meets. CC will compete at the Lyle Hokanson Classic at NDSU on Saturday and then host the annual Cobber Twilight Meet on Tuesday, Apr. 26 at 3 p.m.
