Sophomores Shine In Bisonville
FARGO, N.D. (2/13/16)—Sophomores Hannah Lundstrom and Vanessa Johnson continued their early-season success as they both posted impressive wins at the NDSU Bison Thundering Herd Classis.
Lundstrom made the biggest splash of the day as she won the 400 meters against NCAA Division I and II competition. While her victory in the 400 meters with a time of 58.63 was the marquee finish, it was her second-place finish in the 200 meters that drew all the raves.
Lundstrom ran a 25.89 in the finals of the 200 meters and lost the race by a mere .19 of a second to an NCAA Division I scholarship athlete from NDSU. Lundstrom's finishing time made big news because it broke the school record set by All-American Angie Pfeiffer back in 2006. Pfeiffer's record was 25.91 and Lundstrom clipped it by a mere .02 of a second.
Head coach Marv Roeske put the time in perspective by stating, "I never thought I would be here long enough to see a Pfeiffer record broken."
Lundstrom's time in the 200 is also the fastest in the MIAC this season and sits in the No.20 spot in all of Division III.
Thanks to her win in the 400 meters, Lundstrom also owns the fastest time in the MIAC in that event as well. Her finishing time of 58.63 is the third fastest in school history and 29th best in the nation.
Johnson remains unbeaten in the high jump this season. She has won all three high jump competitions of the year and has posted career best marks in two of the three events.
On Saturday Johnson soared over 5-06.00 which is another personal best. Her winning height is the best mark in the MIAC this season and sits as the 10th best in Division III. With 17 athletes earning a spot at the NCAA National Indoor Meet, Johnson is in prime position to qualify for her second straight national meet.
Johnson's height is also ties for the second best in school history and is just .50 inches shy of the indoor program record.
The high jump continues to be a standout event for the Cobbers in 2016. In addition to Johnson's victory in the event, junior Emma Peterson was fourth with a height of 5-02.25 and freshman Jenna Stilwell was sixth with the same height. Both Peterson and Stilwell sit in the top 7 of the conference in the event this season.
Stilwell, Peterson and teammate Marissa Andersen also recorded top 11 finishes in the long jump. Stilwell posted a distance of 16-03.00 and finished ninth while Andersen was 10th at 15-01.50 and Peterson 11th at 15-00.05. Stilwell's mark is a career best and pushes her into the top 15 of the conference.
Brianna Gruenberg and Sarah Curran recorded the other top 3 track finishes for the Cobbers. Gruenberg was second in the 3000 meters at 10:57.50 and Curran was third with a time of 11:04.64. The times for both Gruenberg and Curran were career bests.
WHAT'S NEXT
Concordia will head to Collegeville next weekend to compete in the St. Ben's Quadrangular. The meet on Saturday, Feb. 20 is the first of three events the Cobbers will compete at St. John's at this season.
