Lundstrom Goes Really Fast At Cobber Twilight Meet

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/28/15)--- Concordia used the annual Cobber Twilight Meet to better their qualifying marks for the upcoming MIAC Outdoor Meet and position themselves for a run at another run at the top 6 in the conference.

Greta Walsh and Mikayla Forness earned the only event wins for the Cobbers but took a back seat to freshman Hannah Lundstrom who put up not one, but two top times in the MIAC this season. The trio helped CC place second in the final team standings with a total of 159.50 points.

The meet was originally scheduled for Apr. 21 but was postponed due to weather conditions. Because of the postponement the field had more of a local flavor as in years past. The Cobbers competed with select athletes from North Dakota State, MSU Moorhead, University of North Dakota, Jamestown, Bemidji State and Valley City State.

Lundstrom didn't win the 200 and 400 meters but both her finishing times were the fastest in the MIAC this season. She finished second in both events as she raced to a 25.53 in the 200 meters and crossed the line in 57.71 in the 400 meters. Her time in the 200 meters is tops in the MIAC by .06 of a second and is the second fastest in school history. The 57.71 in the 400 meters ties for the fourth fastest in school history and is the No.1 mark in the conference by .14 of a second. Both times also place her in the top 50 of Division III.

Walsh won the triple jump with a season-best distance of 34-09.50. That mark places her in the top 10 of the conference. Freshman teammate Vanessa Johnson also had a season-best mark in the triple jump as she went 33-02.50 which qualifies her for the conference meet with the No.16 best mark in the MIAC.

Forness, who owns the top mark in the heptathlon this season, won the javelin at the Cobber Twilight. Her winning distance of 130-09 is a season best and places her in the No.2 spot in the conference – just below teammate Olivia Johnson and ahead of teammate Cherae Reeves.

Reeves finished second in the shot put and third in the javelin at the Cobber Twilight. She put up a distance of 46-08.00 in the shot put and a season-best mark of 123-07 in the javelin. She is now No.3 in the javelin in the MIAC behind Forness and Johnson.

Hillary Birchem, who owns the No.5 top throw in Division III in the discus this season placed fourth in the event on Tuesday. Her best mark came in her very first attempt of the competition and measured in at 146-11. That is 10 feet off her season-best mark.

Forness will now lead the Concordia multi-event crew to the MIAC heptathlon on Thursday, Apr. 30 and Friday, May 1 at Carleton College. Lundstrom will lead the rest of the Cobbers to the Ron Masanz Invite held at MSU Moorhead on Saturday, May 2.
