Marathon Matches Can't Swing Team Score In Cobbers' Favor

FARGO, N.D. (3/20/22)---Concordia won a pair of marathon singles matches, but it wasn't enough as they dropped their second straight 6-3 score line of the weekend. The Cobbers won a lone doubles match and then two singles bouts in a 6-3 defeat to St. Mary's.

The Cobbers' match with the Cardinals feature two of the most dramatic singles bouts of the season. One of the singles matches went to the 24th point in the super-set, tie-breaker, while another was decided by a pair of sets that went to tie breakers.

The longest singles match of the year belonged to first-year player Mary Skorich who won the 24-point super-set marathon at No.4 singles. She lost the first set 6-3, but then rallied to win the second set 7-5. That set the stage for a nail-biting super-set. Neither player was able to pull away from the other, and they traded points until the score was tied at 11-11. Skorich then won the match by grabbing the next two points to claim the 13-11 win.

The victory was Skorich's fifth of the year in singles play. She is now 5-7.

While the overall team scores over the weekend were alike, the only similar individual score line came at No.6 singles where Erin Borchard ran her win streak to six matches. The first two sets in her bout at No.6 singles were settled in the tie-breaker. Borchard lost the first tie-breaker 7-5, but then rallied in the second to win 8-6. She then held off her opponent in the super-set and won 10-5. It was the first super-set win of the year for Borchard.

Borchard is now 6-1 in singles play in 2022, and lost since the opening match of the year on Feb. 26.

The Cobbers' doubles win came from the No.1 duo of Raquel Egge and Skorich who also won in the tie-breaker. They were able to wear down their opponents in the final stages of the match and won 8-7 (6).

The victory was the first of the season for the team of Egge and Skorich.
