ORLANDO, Fla. (3/05/20)—Concordia finished out their spring training trip to Florida on a high note with a dominating 8-1 win over Adrian under the lights at the USTA National Campus on Thursday.

The Cobbers' win marks the third straight year they have defeated Adrian by a score of 8-1. The CC singles game was also on point as they swept all six singles matches for the second consecutive season against the Bulldogs.

The win is the second in the last three matches for Concordia. They finish their Florida trip with a 2-3 mark and are now 4-8 on the season.   

The Cobbers turned up the heat from the opening serve in doubles. They claimed wins in two of the three matches. The No.1 team of Raquel Egge and Jenna Forknell grabbed an 8-5 win at the top doubles spot. The No.2 tandem of Izzi Nankivel and Carolyn Voss followed suit with an 8-6 victory.

The No.3 team of Abby Westrum and Taylor Partington fought hard but fell just short as they lost in the tie-breaker 8-7.

The doubles play was only a warm-up for what was to come in the singles matches. Concordia was as hot as the Orlando weather for the week and the Cobbers blew through the six matches like the wind that was gusting all day long.  

Egge continued her strong freshman campaign with a dominant 6-0, 6-0, double bagel win at No.1 singles. The win was Egge's third of the week in Florida and she is now 7-4 on the year.

Forknell added to the strong outing with a 6-1,6-2 victory at No.2 singles. She led the Cobbers in singles wins on the spring training trip. She was an impressive 4-1 in Florida and, like Egge, has seven victories for the year with a 7-5 record.

The two top singles players for the Cobbers now have a combined 14 wins on the season.

Freshman Nankivel completed a 6-2,6-4 victory at the No.3 position in the lineup. The win was Nankivel's second of the year.

One of the most exciting matches of the day came at No.4 singles where Voss outlasted her opponent in a thrilling 6-4, 7-5 victory. The win was also Voss' second of the year.

Brianna Bell and Abby Westrum closed out the singles sweep for the Cobbers. Bell found her momentum at the end of the first set and the cruised in the second and posted a 7-5, 6-2 win at No.5 singles. Bell is now third on the team in singles wins with five and show won two of her last three matches in Florida.

Westrum was making her season singles debut and was never in trouble in her match at the No.6 spot.  She started quickly and set the tone with a 6-1 victory in her first set. Westrum closed out the match with a 6-4 win in the second set.  

The singles sweep was the second for the Cobbers this year. The other clean sheet came in the season opener against Crown.

UP NEXT: Concordia won't have much of a break once they step off the plane in Minneapolis as they will head straight to St. Peter to take on perennial MIAC power Gustavus on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 9 a.m. in the newly remodeled Swanson Tennis Center.
