Turning Up The Heat In Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. (3/03/20)--- Concordia matched the record-setting heat in Florida as they edged out NAIA opponent Midway (Ky.) on a day where Orlando hit a record high temp of 89 degrees for Mar. 3. The maroon and gold posted one of their strongest performances of the season by defeating the Eagles 4-3 at the USTA National Tennis Center.

The Cobbers relied on strong singles play in the NAIA format match to secure their third win of the year.

Freshman Raquel Egge dominated her opponent at No.1 singles. She rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 straight set victory. Egge is now 6-3 on the year.

Sophomore Brianna Bell followed suit, defeating her opponent by an identical 6-2, 6-0 margin at No.5 singles. Bell now has four wins on the year.

Junior Jenna Forknell is turning into the poster person for long, "wear out your opponent" victories as she recorded her second 3-set win of the week in Florida. After dropping the first set 6-4, Forknell picked up her play and dominated the second set 6-1. In similar fashion to her Monday morning win against North Central, Forknell took the super-tiebreaker down to the wire. She was able to come through in the final two points and won 11-9. Forknell is now 6-4 on the year.

Sophomore Abby Westrum was awarded the fourth singles win for the Cobbers as she was awarded a forfeit due to Midway not having an opponent for her to play.

COBBERS SOAR AGAINST THE EAGLES: The victory marked the second straight set team win over Midway. The Cobbers defeated the Eagles last year over spring break by a score of 7-2 (NCAA DIII format). Midway is one of two schools that the Cobbers have wins over last season and this season. The other team is Crown who the Cobbers defeated 9-0 to open their season.

UP NEXT: Concordia (3-7) will enjoy their off day at the beach tomorrow as they prepare for their final matches in the Sunshine State on Thursday, Mar. 5. The Cobbers will face Trine (Ind.) at 10:30 a.m. and Adrian College in the nightcap at 5:30 p.m. Both matches will be held at the USTA National Tennis Center.
