Sweet Sunshine Sendoff

ORLANDO, Fla. (2/28/18)---Concordia saved its best for last during their spring break trip to Florida. The Cobbers recorded their first two wins in the Sunshine State by beating Rose-Hulman (Ind.) 7-2 and Adrian (8-1).

The Cobbers five of six doubles bouts and 10 of 12 singles matches on the day to up their overall record to 3-8 on the season.

Concordia head coach Joseph Murrey switched up his top 2 doubles teams during the two matches but it was the No.3 doubles team of freshmen Josie Beachy and Lexi Johnson who remained together for both matches and posted a pair of wins. Beachy and Johnson won both doubles matches by identical scores of 8-4 and pushed their season record to 3-5 on the season. Their three wins is the most by any CC doubles team this year.

Kendra Stoick and Maia Wendel won 8-2 at No.2 doubles in the opener against Rose-Hulman and then Stoick teamed with Jenna Forknell and won 8-2 at No.1 singles in the second match against Adrian. Wendel partnered with Lisa Neumann and claimed an 8-4 decision at No.2 doubles against Adrian as the Cobbers swept the doubles bouts against the Bulldogs.

Forknell, Stoick, Neumann and Johnson all won two singles matches on the day. Neumann and Johnson both recorded straight set victories in the two matches. Neumann won 6-3, 6-0 at No.4 singles against the Fightin' Engineers and then went 6-4, 7-5 vs. Adrian. Johnson started the day with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No.6 singles and then collected a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the second match.

Forknell, the team's No.1 singles player, had to go to the super-set tie-breaker in the first match. She won the first set 6-3 against Rose-Hulman but then dropped the second set 7-5. Forknell then prevailed 10-5 in the tie-breaker. She then used that momentum to win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, in her final match in Florida.

Stoick also needed to go to the super-set tie-breaker in her first match at No.2 singles and like Forknell she also lost the second set in her opening match. Stoick won 6-3 in the first set but then lost 6-2. She then battled back to claim a 10-4 win in the tie-breaker. Stoick would go on to record a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Adrian.

JOHNSON JOTS: Freshman Lexi Johnson posted the most singles wins in Florida. She went 3-2 playing the majority of her matches at No.5 or No.6 singles on the spring break trip and is now 4-7 on the year. Her four wins is tied with fellow freshman Jenna Forknell for most singles victories on the season.
