Princess Of The Super-Set Tie-Breaker

FARGO, N.D. (3/22/15)—Concordia was able to play in front of the home fans for the first time in two weeks and dropped an 8-1 decision to St. Benedict.

Concordia, who has yet to play outside since returning from their spring break to California, have played seven of their eight matches this year on a Sunday and fall to 2-6 on the season. CC is now 0-5 in MIAC play. The Blazers win for the second straight time and move to 4-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Junior Morgan Sawatzke came up with the lone win for Concordia on the day. Sawatzke showed her determination as she outlasted her opponent 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 in the No.5 singles position. Sawatzke cruised to the early 6-2 win in the first set but then stumbled on serve in the second and lost 6-4. Sawatzke refused to be defeated in the super-set tie-breaker and earned the 10-8 victory.

The win was Sawatzke's second singles victory of the year and pushes her into the team lead for singles wins with Jade Haseltine and Taylor Peterson. Sawatzke is now 2-5 on the year.

Sawatzke is now 2-0 in super-set tie-breaker matches this year. She also won in the tie-breaker in the opening match of the year against Bemidji State. Sawatzke is now 4-1 in her college career in matches that go to the super-set tie-breaker.

The Cobbers reordered their doubles sequence and almost came up with a victory. Haseltine and Peterson stepped into the No.1 doubles spot and lost 8-4 in match that featured good play at the net. Brittany Glatt and Kendra Stoick were placed in the No.2 doubles position. Glatt and Stocik fell 8-3 in a match that had several long rallies from both sides.

Stoick lost the closest singles match after Sawatzke's win at No.5 singles. Playing at the No.3 singles spot, Stoick lost 6-3, 6-1.

Concordia will once again take the court on a Sunday when they host defending MIAC champion on Mar. 29 at 2:30 p.m. at Courts Plus in Fargo.
