A Super Sunday Streak Snapper
FARGO, N.D. (2/01/15)—It took Super Bowl Sunday for Concordia to stop their two-year long losing streak and set the tone for a whole new season. Senior Taylor Peterson clinched the 5-4 win over Bemidji State when she did her best Adam Vinatieri impersonation and kicked home a 7-5, 6-3 win in the final singles match of the day.
Concordia's victory over Bemidji State put an end to the team's 35-match losing streak which started on the first match of the 2013 season. The last Cobber win came in the final match of the 2012 season and Peterson is the only player on the current roster who was on that team. In addition to snapping the 35-match skid, the Cobbers also won more individual and doubles games on Super Bowl Saturday (5) than they did in the final 13 total matches of 2013.

Peterson and doubles partner Jade Haseltine both had two wins on the day as the tandem accounted for four of the team's five wins. Peterson and Haseltine came away with an 8-3 victory at No.2 doubles.
The singles play was all about the super-set tie-breaker for Concordia. The Cobbers posted three of their four wins in individual matches via the tie-breaker. Only Peterson, whose match sealed the win at No.4 singles, didn't have to go to the super-set to come away with a win.
Haseltine has the biggest comeback of any singles player for CC. She got "bageled" in the opening set ant then roared back to win 6-3 in the second and took the tie-breaker 10-8 at No.3 singles. The win for Haseltine was her first collegiate singles victory after not earning a win in her freshman season last year.
Junior Morgan Sawatzke stumbled in the second set of her match at No.5 singles but then responded with an 11-9 victory in the tie-breaker to win 6-2, 2-6, 11-9.
Rose Reinert matched her 2014 singles win total when she walked away with a win at No.6 singles. Like Sawatzke, who was playing on the court right next to Reinert, she had a hiccup in set No.2 but then recovered in the tie-breaker to come out with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 victory.
The score to the match was deadlocked at 4-4 with five of the six singles matches finishing before the bout at No.4 singles was over. The team match would be decided by the last singles bout so all of the players on both teams convened in the stands off of the court to watch the outcome. Peterson didn't realize that her match would decide the overall team result until she was mobbed after winning match point in the ninth game of the second set.
Peterson, who only played two singles matches in 2014, recorded her first singles victory since her freshman season in 2012.
Concordia will look to continue its winning ways when they host the MIAC opener on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Cobbers will square off against Bethel at 2:30 p.m. at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
