Cobbers Save Best For Final Day Of The Season

ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/28/13)—The final two matches of the season proved to be the closest of the conference season for the Cobbers as they narrowly lost 6-3 at Macalester and Hamline in the season finales on Sunday.

The back-to-back 6-3 losses was the second half of a home-and-away two-match conference weekend. Concordia dropped a 9-0 decision on Saturday against Bethel at Courts Plus in Fargo.

On Sunday in the first match against the Scots, the Cobbers were on fire to start the match. Concordia won two of the three doubles matches and led 2-1 heading into singles play. The No.1 tandem of Chelsie McGraw and Olivia DeLeon won 8-6 to pick up their first conference victory of the season. The No.3 doubles squad of Kaitlyn Davies and Morgan Sawatzke then added an 8-6 victory to record their team-high second MIAC win of the year. CC could have won all three doubles bouts but Taylor Peterson and Brittany Glatt were narrowly edged in extra games at 9-7 at No.2 doubles.

Davies recorded the lone singles win for Concordia against Macalester. She cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 straight set victory at No.5 singles. The win was Davies' team-leading third conference singles victory of the year. She finished her sophomore season with a 3-6 record against league opponents.

The second match against the Pipers was all about singles play as McGraw, Davies and Sawatzke all claimed victories. After dropping all three doubles bouts, McGraw earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No.1 singles to post her first victory of the season in the final match of her career. Davies and Sawatzke then recorded wins at the No.5 and 6 spots in the order. Davies won the closest match of the day as she was victorious in the super-set tie-breaker and Sawatzke came away with a straight set 6-4, 7-5 win at No.6 singles. The win for Davies was her team-leading fourth singles victory of the year.
