Koskiniemi Named MIAC Athlete of the Week!
MOORHEAD, Minn. (3/27/12)—Concordia
freshman Andrea Koskiniemi (Staples,
Minn./Staples-Motley HS) was named the MIAC Women's Tennis Player
of the Week it was announced on Tuesday. Koskiniemi won all four of
her matches and helped the Cobbers win both their conference
matches over the weekend.
It is the first conference award for Koskiniemi. She becomes the
second Cobber player to earn the MIAC weekly honor. Senior Andrea
Rognlien was named the MIAC Tennis Player of the Week on February
21.
Koskiniemi went 2-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles competition
in the Cobbers' wins over Macalester and St. Mary's. Against
Macalester on Saturday Koskiniemi scored a 6-3, 6-1, win at No. 3
singles and teamed with Julie Olson for a 9-7 win
at No. 2 doubles in Concordia's 7-2 win. In the doubles match,
Koskiniemi and Olson faced match point on a pair of occasions but
battled back to eventually earn the win. In CC's match versus St.
Mary's on Sunday, Koskiniemi teamed with Olson for an 8-4 win at
No. 2 doubles, and her No. 3 singles win again featured a dramatic
rally. Koskiniemi dropped the first set, 4-6, and the second set
went to a tie breaker. However, Koskiniemi emerged victorious in
the second set, 7-6 (7-2), and took the third set 10-4 for the
win.
Koskiniemi is 6-4 in her last 10 overall matches and is now 6-8 in
the team's 14 matches. She is also 6-8 in doubles play.
With the two wins, Concordia is now above the .500 mark with an
8-6 overall record and is 2-4 in conference competition. Koskiniemi
and the Cobbers will put their three-match win streak on the line
when they play a pair of conference matches over the weekend. CC
will play at Bethel on Saturday at 6 p.m. and then head to
Northfield to take on Carleton on Sunday at 9 a.m.
