Successful St. Paul Weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/28/12)--Freshman Alexis Philbrick finished second in the 1650-yard freestyle to help Concordia finish fourth at the St. Kate's Invite on Saturday. The fourth-place finish, after the Cobbers were seeded to finish sixth, capped a successful weekend in St. Paul. CC beat Hamline 154-75 in a dual meet on Friday.

Philbrick was one of six Cobber athletes to post top 5 finishes at the St. Kate's Invite. Philbrick's time of 19:59.70 was a career best. It was one of many career, and season, bests for Concordia at the meet.        

Jasmine Hanson, Hannah Winge, Greta Nycklemoe, Molly Hansvick and Alison Hall were the other Concordia athletes that posted top 5 finishes at the meet. Hanson joined Philbrick in the 1650-yard freestyle to give the Cobbers two swimmer in the top 4. Hanson swam a 20:16.90. That time is a career-best and qualifies her for the MIAC Championship Meet. Winge posted her top 5 finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. She swam a season-best 2:43.51 and placed fourth in the event. Nycklemoe was seventh in the 200-yard butterfly with a mark of 3:17.07.

Hansvick and Hall led the CC dive crew with solid finishes.  Hansvick scored top 5 finishes in both diving events. She recorded 361.75 points in the 3-meter competition and was fourth and had 364.45 points in the 1-meter event and finished in fifth place. Hall placed fifth in the 3-meter diving event with a total of 330.20 points. Hall was also seventh in the 1-meter.

Sophomore Kirsten Anderson also had a stellar meet for Concordia. Anderson had top 15 finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle and posted career non-taper times in both events. She swam a 26.30 in the 50-yard freestyle and a 58.64 in the 100-yard freestyle.

Senior Jesse Obrecht, the face of Concordia College, also had a pair of top 15 finishes. She was 15th in the 100-yard breaststroke and 13th in the 200-yard breaststroke.

On Friday the Cobbers posted 14 season bests and were led by senior Adva Aharonovich as they posted the 79-point victory over Hamline. Aharonovich finished in the top 3 in both the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke and qualified for the MIAC Championship Meet in both events in helping the Cobers to their third dual-meet win of the season.

Kelsey Appert, Anderson, Hansvick, Winge, Philbrick and Hanson all won individual events for Concordia and the Cobbers claimed the victory in the meet-ending 200-yard freestyle relay.  Appert continued with her good weekend on Saturday when she was 13th in the 200-yard backstroke and 15th in the 500-yard freestyle.         

Concordia will now have three weeks to prepare for the MIAC Championship Meet. The Cobbers will compete at the conference meet on Feb. 16-18 at the University of Minnesota.
