Late Goal Derails Cobbers In Season Opener

MENOMONIE, Wis. (9/01/21)---In the end, the only thing separating Concordia and Wis.-Stout in the 2021 season opener was a goal in the final 8-minutes of play. The teams were even on the statistical sheet but the Blue Devils were able to score the only goal of the game at 82:56 which sent the Cobbers to a 1-0 defeat.

Both teams had four total shots in the game. Stout held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal with the difference being the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute of play. Concordia had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks for the game.

The Cobbers had a pair of chances in the first half. Junior Grace Lawlor had a shot sail wide in the first 15 minutes of play while freshman Alexandra Araiza had a shot miss the target just past the 30-minute mark.

Concordia's first shot on goal of the year came in the 49th minute of play when freshman defender Hallie Thompson had her blast stopped by the Stout goalie. The Cobbers' other chance on goal was played by senior Lauren Tschider midway through the final period.

The Blue Devils scored the game winner off a cross that found an attacker crashing the goal and was able to play the ball past Cobber keeper Bre Nelson.

Nelson finished the game with two saves.
 
UP NEXT: Concordia will host its home opener on Friday, Sept. 3 when the face another WIAC foe. CC will square off against Wis.-Eau Claire at 4 p.m. at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
