Early Game Winner Ends Overtime Streak

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/26/19)----There would be no overtime this game. The Cobbers broke their streak of consecutive overtime games by shutting out Gustavus 1-0.

Concordia entered the game having lost in three straight overtime nail-biters, but a first-half goal by freshman Grace Lawlor and late-game defensive stand helped the Cobbers earn their second conference win of the year.

Concordia is now 9-7-0 overall and 2-7-0 in conference play. The nine wins is the most by a CC team since the 2015 season. Gustavus is now 4-12-0 in all games and 2-7-0 in the MIAC.

Lawlor scored the game-winning goal in the 15th minute of play and the Cobber defense made it hold up as they posted the team's fifth shutout of the season.

Lawlor got Concordia on the board at the 14:07 mark on an assist from senior Kalli Baarstad. T was Lawlor's third goal of the year and Baarstad earned her 12th point of the season.

The goal came after Concordia had put up three shots on goal in the first nine minutes of the opening half and had their best offensive chances of the period.

Concordia then started the second half with a couple of chances but then locked down their defense to make sure they could come up with the shutout.

The Gusties made a late push to get the game-tying goal but junior goalie Erin Larsen was able to come up with key saves down the stretch.

Larsen finished with seven saves in the game and earned her first shutout of the season.

Concordia held an 11-10 advantage in total shots with the Gusties having a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had four corner kicks.The Cobbers had five different players put up two shots each in the game. Lawlor and Karsen Granning led the shot attack with two strikes on goal each.

UP NEXT: Concordia will stay at home and host its final regular-season home game on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 3:30 p.m. when they square off against league-leading Augsburg. The Auggies are 11-3-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the MIAC.
