WINONA, Minn. (10/19/19)---It was a series of thirds for Concordia against St. Mary's on Saturday. The Cobbers played their third consecutive overtime game this season and also played their third straight OT game against the Cardinals.
Unfortunately for Concordia, a St. Mary's goal at the start of the second overtime period sentenced CC to its third straight extra time loss. The Cobbers are now 1-1-1 against SMU in overtime games in the last three years.
Concordia, which also dropped OT decisions to Macalester and St. Thomas in the past seven days, is now 8-7-0 overall and 1-7-0 in conference games. St. Mary's is now unbeaten in three of its last four games and moves to 7-6-1 in all games and 1-6-1 in the MIAC.
The Cobbers best offensive flurry came in the first 10 minutes of play when Kalli Baarstad and Klara Beinhorn put up back-to-back shots on goal in a span of 1:10.
Both teams had a pair of shots in the first period of play. The second half was played mainly between the tops of the penalty areas with only one shot on goal in the final 45 minutes of play.
The first overtime period was more of the same for both teams and it wasn't until the 2:39 mark of the second overtime period that either team was able to get a quality chance on goal. The Cardinals earned the win by scoring at 102:39.
Concordia was outshot 11-4 for the game in total shots and 5-2 in shots on goal. The Cardinals held a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks for the game.
The Cobbers had four different players with shots in the game.
Junior Erin Larsen started the game in goal for Concordia and made four saves in the game.
UP NEXT: Concordia will have a week to train and get ready for Gustavus. The Cobbers will host the Gusties on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. GAC is 3-11 overall and 2-6 in the MIAC.
