Senior Moments Lead To Second Win

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (9/01/19)---Concordia's two seniors led by example as they both scored goals to help the Cobbers post a 2-1 win at Wis.-River Falls. Kalli Baarstad netted a goal in the first half and then Karsen Granning notched the game winner in the second period to give CC the win and keep them perfect on the season at 2-0.

Concordia, who blanked Presentation 3-0 on Friday in Aberdeen, S.D., used the wings to break down the Falcons' defense throughout the game and both goals came off of serves from the outside.

Baarstad started the scoring in the ninth minute of play. She took a pass from freshman Grace Lawlor and slammed home a shot from seven yards out of goal. Lawlor had beaten thr River Falls defense down the left side, cut to the net and then delivered a perfect pass that found Baarstad all alone in the middle of the Falcons' penalty area. Lawlor earned her first collegiate assist and Baarstad picked up her first goal of the season. She now has 14 goals in her Cobber career.

River Falls would tie the game in the second half of the opening period when they were awarded a penalty kick. The UWRF player converted the spot kick at 31:42 and the teams would go into the break tied at 1-1.

The Cobbers upped the intensity to start the second half and held the majority of the play throughout most of the last period of play. CC outshot UWRF 10-6 in the second half.

Granning put the Cobbers in the lead for good when she tapped home a rebound after a corner kick. Baarstad served the corner into the penalty area. After players scrambled for the ball, freshman Sophia Robinson was able to get control and fire a shot on goal. The Falcons' goalie made the initial save but Granning was able to poke home the rebound.

It was Granning's first goal of the year and ninth of her career. Robinson, like Lawlor in the first half, earned her first collegiate point.

The two teams finished the game with 17 total shots each and bot squads had six shots on goal. Concordia held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalie Lexi Jemtrud made five saves to collect her second win of the season.

UP NEXT: Concordia will host its home opener when they face Northwestern (Minn.) in the first game of the Cobber Invite on Friday, Sept. 6 at 3 p.m.
