Baarstad Earns MIAC Weekly Award

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/02/17)---Concordia sophomore midfielder Kalli Baarstad capped off her impressive two games on the field by being named the MIAC Player of the Week.

Baarstad had a hand in both game-winning goals in overtime last week as the Cobbers beat Macalester and Carleton and moved from the bottom of the MIAC all the way to eighth place in the league standings – only two points behind the final playoff spot.

The conference weekly award is the first of her career for Baarstad and she becomes the first Concordia player to receive the honor since the 2014 season when Elizabeth Robinson earned MIAC Player of the Week honors on Oct. 7.

Both of Concordia's game-winning overtime goals came courtesy of Baarstad direct kicks.

Against Macalester on Wednesday, Baarstad got the assist on the game-winning goal in the second overtime session. She took the "dead ball" 25 yards out from the Macalester goal and directly out from the corner of the 6-yard box. Baarstad then curled the ball over the wall and towards the near post. The Scot goalie did well to get a hand on the initial shot but she was unable to control the rebound and CC freshman Klara Beinhorn crashed the net and slotted home the rebound for the winner.

On Saturday at Carleton, Baarstad made sure there would be no need for a rebound. She fired a shot from outside the penalty area that eluded the goalie and found the back of the net in the first overtime period.

The two wins push Concordia's overall record to 4-5-1 on the year. The four wins matches the victory total from last year for CC.

Baarstad now leads the Cobbers in scoring with three goals and three assists for nine points. Last year, in her freshman season, she only amassed one point in nine games played. Baarstad has posted at least one point in five of the team's 10 games in 2017.

Baarstad will look to keep her scoring touch going when Concordia hosts St. Catherine on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. The Wildcats are just above the Cobbers in the league standings in sixth place with eight points.
