A Tough Second Half

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (10/15/16)--- A goal by Alexandra Jones late in the first half brought Concordia within one goal of St. Benedict heading into the break but then the Cobbers conceded three goals in the second period of play and lost 5-1.

The loss is the third straight for Concordia who falls to 3-8-3 overall and 1-6-1 in the MIAC. St. Benedict ends a two-game losing streak and is now 8-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in league play.  

Jones scored on a breakaway in the 32nd minute of play to get Concordia within one at 2-1. Her unassisted goal at 31:10 was her second of the season and gave the Cobbers the momentum heading into halftime.

That momentum lasted until the 58th minute when the Blazers began their three-goal spree that finished at the 82:17 mark. St. Benedict was able to score three times on just three shots during that span of time.

Perhaps the costliest 16-seconds in the game for the Cobbers came at the start of the first half. The Blazers got the opening goal of the game at the 10:01 mark and then added a second an improbable 16-seconds later at 10:17.  

Both teams had seven total shots in the first half of play.

St. Benedict finished the game with a 12-10 advantage in total shots and a 10-4 margin in shots on goal.

Jones and Paige McCullough led the Cobbers with four total shots each. Jones had a team-high three shots on goal from her central midfield position.

Cobber goalie Maddy Reed made three saves in the game.      

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will look to get back on the winning track when they play in Wisconsin for a non-conference game on Sunday, Oct. 16. The Cobbers will play at Wis.-Superior at 1 p.m.
