A Much-Needed Regionally-Ranked Tie

ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/17/16)—Spurred on by a first-half goal from junior Alexandra Jones, Concordia went on to post a 1-1 double overtime tie against regionally-ranked Macalester.

The Cobbers faced an uphill battle heading into Saturday's game having only scored one goal all season and facing a team that had not allowed a goal at home in 2016. Concordia responded by playing one of its best all-around games of the year. CC outshot the Scots 8-4 to earn their third tie of the season.

Concordia is now 0-3-3 in all games and 0-1-1 in conference games while Macalester is now 3-12 overall and 0-1-1 in the MIAC.

Neither team could find the net in the opening half as the game was played mainly between the two penalty areas. The Cobbers had three total shots while the Scots didn't take a shot in the first 45 minutes of the game.

Concordia received the much-needed first goal of the game when Paige McCullough and Emily Wendorff set up Jones for her first goal of the season. McCullough gave the ball to Wendorff who broke into the Macalester penalty area. She then found Jones who was camped in front of the Scots' goal. Jones made no doubt about the finish to give CC the 1-0 lead at the 51:26 mark.

Concordia's lead would last a little over 15 minutes. A Scot attacker took possession of the ball outside the Cobber penalty area and fired home the game-tying goal from 22 yards out.

Both teams would have semi-chances at the end of the second half and into overtime but neither team would be able to create an open opportunity.

The Cobbers held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Wendorff led all players with four total shots while Jones and Wendorff both had two shots on goal.

Maddy Reed made two saves in goal for CC to pick up her third tie of the year.

TIE, TIE, TIE: The three ties recorded by the Cobbers this season is the most in a single season since the 2011 season when the Cobbers went 13-4-6 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia try and get on the board in the win column when they host a midweek non-conference game. The Cobbers will square off against Minn.-Morris on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. The Cougars are currently 0-4 on the season.
