Tough Offensive Day In MIAC Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/14/16)--- Concordia's offensive woes at home continued as they were unable to come up with a goal and lost 3-0 to Hamline in the MIAC opener for both teams.

Despite outshooting the Pipers 8-5 in shots on goal, Concordia couldn't find the net for the third straight game at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex and fell to 0-3-2 on the season. The Cobbers have now gone 310 minutes at home without scoring a goal.

Hamline (5-1-0) got the game-winning goal in the 17th minute of play when the Cobbers had a costly turnover 25 yards out from their own goal. The Pipers were able to pounce on the loose ball and find forward Kaley Roberts who went in on a breakaway and slid home the first of her two goals in the game.

The Pipers nearly doubled their lead in the final seconds of the opening period but a big diving save on a scrum in the penalty area by Cobber goalie Maddy Reed kept the margin at 1-0 heading into the break.

Concordia wouldn't be able to keep Hamline off the board in the first minute of the second half. Once again a Piper player got behind the CC defense on the left side of the penalty area and she was able to tuck the ball inside the right post.

The Cobbers had one chance on goal before Hamline would add the final goal of the game. The Pipers made it 3-0 on a cross from the right wing that was met with a one-time volley from 10 yards out just inside the left post.

Concordia's best opportunity of the game came at the 87:25 mark when a CC attacker found herself wide open in the middle of the Hamline penalty area but her shot went right at the HU goalie.

Hamline had a 9-8 advantage in total shots but the Cobbers held the 8-5 edge in shots on goal.

Senior Paige McCullough led all players with three shots and three shots on goal. Five other CC players had a single shot and a single shot on goal.

Reed finished with two saves in goal for the Cobbers. She did most of her work by coming out and cutting down would-be Piper through balls.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will look to get their offense on track when they play at Macalester on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
