TACOMA, Wash. (9/11/16)—One drought ended and another continued as Concordia finished off a pair of games in the state of Washington.
The Cobbers dropped a 4-0 decision at Pacific Lutheran on Friday and then fell 6-1 at No.20-ranked Puget Sound on Sunday.
The two losses over the weekend keep Concordia searching for its first win of the year as they are now 0-2-2 on the season. The drought that ended on Sunday was the scoreless streak. CC entered the game against the Loggers having been held off the scoresheet for 310 minutes to start the season. That changed when senior Paige McCullough scored an unassisted goal just after the break.
Unfortunately for the Cobbers it wouldn't be enough against nationally ranked Puget Sound. The Loggers got five goals from four different players in the first 35:41 of the first half and rolled to the five-goal win.
The first 15 minutes of the game on Sunday decided the outcome. Concordia allowed four scores before the game was 15 minutes old. The Cobbers trailed only 2-1 in the final 75 minutes of play but couldn't dig out of the hole against Puget Sound who advanced to second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2015.
The only thing left to decide was whether CC could get on the board before they headed back to Moorhead. The answer came in the 49th minute when McCullough fought off a Logger defender in the penalty area and fired home a shot that beat the Puget Sound keeper.
The goal at 48:30 was McCullough's eighth of her career and ties her output from the 2015 season.
Concordia was outshot 27-11 in total shots and 15-5 in shots on goal. Emily Wendorff had a team-high three shots while five different CC players had a single shot on goal.
Cobber goalie Maddy Reed made nine saves in the 90-minute game.
A slow start hampered the Cobbers on Friday as well. Pacific Lutheran was able to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first 12:28 of play. The Lutes were able to secure a third goal just before the break an then finished off the scoring at the 76:45 mark of the second half.
Pacific Lutheran (3-0-0) outshot CC 16-4 in total shots but only 5-1 in shots on goal. McCullough led Concordia with two total shots while Rachel Osmundson had the only shot on frame for the Cobbers.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will look for its first win of the season when they host the MIAC opener on Wednesday. The Cobbers will square off against the Pipers at 1:30 p.m.
