The Queen Of Homecoming

The Queen Of Homecoming

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/03/15)--- Sadie Hayes had a pretty good week. On Thursday she was crowned Homecoming Queen during the coronation ceremony. On Saturday she capped her fairytale week by scoring the game-winning goal in Concordia's 3-1 win over St. Mary's.

Hayes' goal at 52:56 helped the Cobbers end a two-game losing streak and post their first home win of the season. It was Hayes' second career goal and first of the season.

The win evens Concordia's season record at 5-5-0. The Cobbers also earned a much-needed conference victory and are now 2-3-0 in the MIAC. St. Mary's loses for the second straight game and is now 3-7 in all games and 1-4 in league play.

Concordia also broke their streak of giving up goals early in the first half. Concordia held the Cardinals off the board in the first 15 minutes of play and then got on the scoreboard with a goal at 17:56. Paige McCullough connected on her first goal of the year to put CC out in front 1-0.

The lead would last until the first minute of the second half. Concordia dominated the first period of play, outshooting SMU 11-0 in total shots and 6-0 in shots on goal.

The Cardinals used the halftime break to regroup and tied the game at 1-1 at 45:54. The goal came on the SMU's first shot of the game.

The tie game lasted for less just over seven minutes and then the Homecoming Queen would assemble her royal court in front of the St. Mary's goal. She then christened the first home win by knocking the ball into the net after McCullough served the ball from the corner.

Emily Wendorff would put the game out of reach when she scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 68:39.

Concordia wound up outshooting the Cardinals 21-1 in total shots for the game. CC held a 13-1 edge in shots on goal and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks.

Wendorff recorded a game-high nine shots in the game and McCullough put up five shots.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS: The Cobbers are now 5-0 in 2015 when they score more than one goal in a game. The three goal outburst was a single-game high for the season. Wendorff has now scored a single goal in five games this year and the Cobbers are 4-1 when she finds the back of the net.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Cobbers will have little time to celebrate their Homecoming win. Concordia will host non-conference foe Wis.-Stevens Point on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.
