$50 Head Goal Kick Starts Key Conference Victory

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/01/14)—Elizabeth Robinson's mom would pay her $50 for every head goal she would score when she was younger. On Wednesday in a key conference showdown with Augsburg , Robinson kick started the Concordia offense with a $50 special that led to a 2-1 win over the Auggies.

"When I was little my mom would pay me $50 for every head goal," commented Robinson after the game. "I guess I'm going to talk to her now."

Robinson's head goal in the seventh minute of play combined with a breakaway goal off the foot of Emily Wendorff in the 24th minute was enough to keep Concordia  in MIAC play and unbeaten its last seven games. The Cobbers are now 3-0-1 in conference play and 8-1-1 in all games.

The loss is the first for Augsburg in the league and snaps a three-game win streak. The Auggies are now 3-1-0 in the MIAC and 7-3-0 in all games.

Robinson's opening goal of the game set the tone for the Cobber offense as they were able to open up the Augsburg defense on the wing and play the ball into the middle of the defense. Cobber sophomore Erika Grinde won the ball in the middle of the field and slotted a pass to Rochelle Hickerson on the left wing. Hickerson then raced down the wing and crossed the ball to the back post where Robinson ran on to the service and headed back across the face of the goal and into the left side of the net.

"Rochelle got played out wide on the left side and dribbled it down with her awesome and unbeatable speed," recalled Robinson. "And then crossed it in from the corner and I was at the back post and the defender judged it a little short and I headed it past the goalie."

The goal at the 6:54 mark was Robinson's fourth of the year which tied Hickerson for the team lead. Hickerson and Grinder both earned their team-leading third assist on the play.

Concordia would continue to gain possession of the ball in the middle of the field and then press forward to put pressure on the Augsburg back line. The ability to go at the Auggie defenders with speed paid dividends midway through the first half when Paige McCullough stepped in front of an errant Augsburg pass in the middle of the field and one-touched a pass through the Auggie defense that set Wendorff free on a breakaway. Wendorff made no mistake on the shot and she put Concordia in front 2-0 at the 23:19 mark.

It was also Wendorff's fourth goal of the year which tied her with Hickerson and Robinson for the team lead. Wendorff had four goals in all of her freshman season in 2013.

Augsburg would get one back before halftime to set the stage for a pressure filled second half.

Both teams had chances in the second half but both goalies came up with big saves or big stops on crossing attempts.
