Title Race Tightens

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/26/13)—The race for their second straight MIAC regular-season title just got a little tighter on Saturday as Concordia gave up a late-game goal and lost 2-1 at Carleton.

The defeat drops the Cobbers into a tie for third place with two games left in the regular season. Concordia is just two points behind Macalester and St. Ben's – CC's final two opponents on the schedule.

Concordia was forced to chase the game with the Knights after the second minute of play. Carleton surprised the Cobbers early with a goal at the 1:23 mark.

Concordia would equalize in the 29th minute of play when junior Elizabeth Robinson scored on a penalty kick at 28:02. Robinson was able to convert on the spot kick after a fould was called on a Carleton defender inside the penalty area. Robinson made good on her team-leading 12th goal of the season. She now has 12 goals and two assists for 26 points.

The game winning goal came in the 72nd minute and forced the Cobbers to try and push forward to come up with a game tying goal. Concordia had four of the final five shots in the final 15 minutes of play and also had a corner kick but never could get their second goal of the game.

Concordia outshot Carleton 12-9 in total shots but the Knights had a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Robinson had a game-high five shots.

Cobber goalie Elizabeth Bitzan made four saves in 90 minutes of action.

Concordia will continue their quest for another title when they host Macalester on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 4 p.m.
