MIAC Win Streak Comes To An End

MIAC Win Streak Comes To An End

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/28/13)—In a game that was played with end-to-end flow, it was a scramble in front of goal in the second overtime that sent Concordia to their first MIAC loss since the start of the 2012 season.

The Cobbers controlled the possession for most of their game against St. Olaf but it was the Oles ability to counter that earned a 2-1 double overtime victory. Concordia had won 11 straight conference games before the loss on Saturday.

Concordia sees their four-game overall win streak come to an end and falls to 6-3-0 in overall games and 3-1-0 in the MIAC. St. Olaf evens their overall record at 4-4-1 and is now 2-1-0 in league play.

The Cobbers were forced to chase the game for almost the entire first half and well into the second period. St. Olaf scored at the 13:40 mark when the ball caromed off several players at the top of the CC penalty area and finally settled on Amanda Leone's foot. She was able to knock home a low shot into the right hand corner to give the Oles a 1-0 lead.

Concordia was able to control the center of the field from the play of midfielders Laura and Marta Prosinski and Jamie St. Germain. CC was able to get several chances in the first half but could never get the ball on frame and into the net.

Elizabeth Robinson continued her hot scoring streak in the second half when she equalized for Concordia in the 70th minute. Robinson hammered a rising shot from outside the penalty area that soared past the Ole goalie. Robinson's score at 69:15 was her team-leading fifth of the year. She has now scored three goals in the last two games.

The teams then raced back and forth down the field for the final 20 minutes and into the first overtime period. Players on both teams battled through tired legs and it looked like the game would finish in a 1-1 tie. Unfortunately CC gave up a corner kick with under 3:00 to play in the second extra session and St. Olaf was able to convert after the ball bounced around in the Cobber penalty area and players from both teams took turns trying to get free with the ball.

Concordia held a decided 19-8 edge in total shots in the game. The Cobbers also had a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Robinson had a game-high seven shots.

Cobber goalie Elizabeth Bitzan made two saves while St. Olaf keeper Nora Forbes stopped nine shots to earn her third victory of the year.

Concordia will hit the road as their home-away-home-away conference trend continues. CC will play at Augsburg on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. in a battle of two of the four teams tied for the league lead.
