Second-Half Scores Sink St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/25/13)—A pair of goals from junior Elizabeth Robinson proved to be the deciding factor in the Cobbers' 2-1 win at St. Paul on Wednesday.

Robinsons two goals, which both came in the second half, helped the Cobbers earn their fourth straight win and second consecutive to start the conference season. Concordia is now 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC. CC has now scored two goals in three of the four game during the win streak.

The first half was a scoreless affair with the best chance coming off the foot of Concordia winger Rochelle Hickerson. She broke free of the defense and went in on a breakaway from 20 yards out. Unfortunately for CC her shot beat the keeper towards the right side but wound up hitting the right post and rebounding out of harm's way on the left side of the penalty area.

Concordia outshot St. Thomas 7-4 in total shots in the first half and 5-3 in shots on goal.

Robinson wasted little time in giving Concordia a one-goal lead in the second half. She was able to run on to a ball crossed from the left wing from defender Baylie Young. Robinson reached out to strike the ball before the UST keeper and defense could win the race and the ball spun into the far right side of the net. Her goal at 47:12 was her third of the season.

Robinson would add to that season goal total 19:02 later when she took advantage of a bad touch from a UST defender, stole the ball and raced on a breakaway from 25 yards out. She then calmly placed the ball in the upper right portion of the goal to stake the Cobbers to a 2-0 lead. The goal pushed Robinson into a tie for the team in points with 10.

St. Thomas (4-4/1-1 MIAC) made the game interesting in the final 15 minutes of play when they scored off of a dead ball service at 72:37.

The Concordia defense then locked the door on the net and did not allow another quality chance for the final 17:23 of play.

Cobber goalie Elizabeth Bitzan stopped two shots to earn her sixth win of the year. UST keeper Jenny Grahek made seven saves in a losing effort.

Concordia now returns to Moorhead to host a home game for the second Saturday in a row. The Cobbers will square off against St. Olaf on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2:30 p.m.
