Third-Minute Menace

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/08/13)—Concordia gave up a goal in the third minute of the first half and the third minute of the second half and lost 2-1 to regionally ranked Augustana (Ill.) on Sunday.

The Cobbers got to within one goal with 19:00 left in the second half on a goal by freshman Emily Wendorff but could never come up with the equalizer and lost for the second time in four games this year.

Concordia conceded the opening goal of the game at 2:25 when the Augustana attack broke free and the ball was crossed to Somer Droszkowski who hit a one-time shot into the left side of the net. The Cobbers then rallied to take the play to the Vikings and almost came up with the equalizer. In the 37th minute junior forward Elizabeth Robinson fired a shot from outside the penalty area which Augustana goalie Meredith Chew turned off the crossbar. The rebound came right to Wendorff who was following up the play and she headed the ball towards the goal from seven yards out. Unfortunately for Concordia that shot also hit the crossbar and caromed away from goal.

The Vikings added to their lead just 2:20 into the final half when Jessa Rizzo chipped home a goal from the left wing from 25 yards out.

The Cobbers proceeded to outshoot the Vikings 5-3 for the rest of the period and continually tried to get chances on the Augustana net. Concordia got on the board when a long cross dropped in the Augustana penalty area and was then mishandled by the Vikings' keeper. Wendorff collected the loose ball and fired it into the vacant net to get CC within one at 2-1.

The Cobbers outshot the Vikings 16-12 in total shots while the shots on goal were even at 9-9.

Concordia will continue with non-conference play when they travel to Eau Claire, Wis. To take on UW-Eau Claire on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2:30 p.m.
