Weiss Named MIAC Player of the Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/22/12)—Junior midfielder Gina Weiss (Monticello, Minn.) was named the MIAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week after she scored two goals in each of Concordia's games last week and held the Cobbers clinch the MIAC regular-season championship.

Weiss earns the conference weekly award for the first time in her career. She also becomes the first CC player to earn the honor this year and first since Kelsey Swagger was named the player of the week on Nov. 1 of last year.

Weiss started the week with two goals on four shots (two on goal) in Wednesday's 3-0 win against St. Catherine. She was great again Saturday, as the Cobbers clinched the title in a decisive 6-0 win at St. Olaf. The junior scored two more goals, this time on three shots (all on goal) to continue her hot streak. Weiss has 16 points in the team's last eight games as Concordia has surged to the MIAC championship. This season, she ranks fourth in the MIAC in goals scored (eight) and seventh in total points (18), while ranking first in goals (six) and third in points (13) on the conference-only leader board.

Weiss and her teammates used the two wins to improve to 12-3-1 overall and 8-1 in the MIAC, and their 24 points in the standings are at least seven more than any other team in the league. The Cobbers close the regular season this week with a home game Tuesday against Augsburg at 1:30 p.m., and then play at St. Ben's on Saturday at 1 p.m. Concordia will open the 2012 MIAC Women's Soccer Playoffs as the tournament's No. 1 seed next week, and will have home-field advantage throughout.
