Offense Can't Get On Track

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/22/12)— Concordia gave up a pair of goals 17 minutes apart in the first half, could never recover and lost 2-0 at home to Carleton on Saturday. The Cobbers outshot the Knights 14-10 but were never able to come up with a goal and lost for the first time in conference play.

Concordia also had their two-game winning streak come to an end and are now 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play. Carleton stops their three-game winless string and move to 5-3-1 in all games and 1-2-0 in the MIAC.

The Cobbers held the play in the first 15 minutes. Concordia had three shots in the first three minutes but two were sent wide left and a third was stopped by Carleton goalie Mikayla Coulombe. The game turned in the 27th minute when Claire McGillem was able to knock home a shot from the top of the box.

Concordia tried to press for the equalizer but was victimized in the 44th minute when Marlena Hartman-Filson duplicated McGillem's effort and punched home her second goal of the year from 18 yards out.

Concordia tried to regroup in the second half but the Knights were able to settle in defensively and made it hard for CC to cut into the two-goal lead. The Cobbers outshot the Knights 9-4 in the second half but wound up being shutout for the first time all season.

In the end Carleton held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. CC goalie Ali Nelson made four saves in the 90 minutes while Coulombe stopped all five shots she faced to earn the shutout. Concordia had the only three corner kicks in the game.

The Cobbers will try and get back on the winning track when they host league-leading St. Thomas on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m.
