MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/12/12)—Single goals by players at opposite ends of their careers helped Concordia better Hamline 2-0 in the conference opener for both teams.

Senior All-American Sarah Rounds and freshman Morgan Holm scored first-half goals to power the Cobbers to their third overall win of the year. CC is now 3-1-1 on the year. The Pipers lose for the first time on the season and are now 4-1-0.

Rounds opened the scoring in the 17th minute when she was played through on a breakaway on the right wing by Liz Robinson. Senior defender Nikole Koehn won the ball in the middle of the field, passed it to Robinson who was able to split the HU defense and find Rounds on a dead sprint heading into the final 25 yards. Rounds then calmly took a few dribble before slotting the ball past the Piper goalie. It was the first goal that Hamline had conceded the entire season. For Rounds it was her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Rounds would then set up the second goal in the 41st minute of play. The Cobbers gained a throw-in deep in Piper territory. Defender Annie Marhula threw the ball in to Rounds who spun of her defender, broke free on the end line and then knocked a pass back to Holm who was standing even with the front post, only seven yards out from goal. Holm then one-timed the pass and tucked it into the upper left hand corner of the net. Rounds earned her third point of the game and 14th for the season. She currently leads the MIAC in total points and most goals.

Staked to a 2-0 lead heading into the second half, Concordia was able to hold the Hamline offense at bay and settled for the two-goal win. The two teams produced only four shots on goal in the second half as the majority of the play was stuck in the middle third of the field.

Concordia had an 11-4 advantage in total shots for the game. CC also held a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. The statistical advantage carried over to corner kicks where the Cobbers had five as compared to only two for Hamline.

CC goalie Ali Nelson was mostly called on to stop any deep Hamline offensive passing threat. She finished with only two saves on the day to earn her second shutout of the year.

The Cobbers will take to the road for their next conference game. Concordia will play at Gustavus on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m.
