"Post"ing A Win Over The Falcons

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/08/12)--- No.12-ranked Concordia dominated their wind-swept game with UW-River Falls but in the end had to survive a late-game surge in order to "post" a 2-1 win over the Falcons.

The Cobbers hit the post on four different occasions in the home opener and outshot River Falls 21-7 but were only able to score two second-half goals. The win keeps CC unbeaten on the year. Concordia is now 2-0-1. The Falcons fall to 1-3-0 on the young season.

The teams battled through the opening 45 minutes of play without a goal. Concordia had an 11-4 advantage in shots and hit the post twice. Emma Ekdahl hit the woodwork in the 38th minute and then Gina Weiss clanked one of off the post in the final minute of play.

Ekdahl then started the second half by knocking a ball off the crossbar in the 58th minute of play. The game was then won in a span of 1:48 starting at the 57:49 mark. Cobber All-American Sarah Rounds scored her third goal of the season when she found the back of the net from the top of the penalty area. Annie Marhula was credited with the first of her two assists. Marhula then set up the game winner at 59:37. Weiss came up with the finish when she hammered a shot off the goalie from five yards out. It was Weiss' first goal of the year.

It looked like the Cobbers would cruise to the win from that point on but a defensive miscue in the 68th minute led to a tense finish. UWRF forward Alyssa Manor pounced on a loose ball after some indecision by the Cobbers and was able to fire home a shot from 30 yards out .

The Falcons closest chance for the equalizer came in the final five minutes of play. Manor had a shot sail high and then a last-minute corner kick was cleared away from danger.

Concordia wound up with an 8-4 edge in shots on goalie. CC senior goalie Ali Nelson made three saves while River Falls keeper Rebecca Kramer turned back six shots.

The Cobbers will continue with their non-conference schedule when they host regional foe Wartburg on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.
