Attacking Cobbers Battle Northern State

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/20/19)---Concordia continued to show off its new style of attack wrestling in their first home dual meet against Division II Northern State. The Cobbers won two of the first three individual matches and two of the final four against the Wolves but couldn't come with a win in the middle and fell 24-15.

The final score is almost identical to last year's dual with the Wolves as the Cobbers lost 23-14 and also came away with four individual wins.

There were plenty of highlights for Concordia in their first home dual of the year. The Cobbers showcased their brand new wrestling mat and their more aggressive style of wrestling which led to the night.

Junior Cole Kubesh staked Concordia to a 6-0 lead as he earned a pin with only 6-seconds left in the second period. His pin at the 4:54 mark was his second of the season. Kubesh is now 3-3 on the season.

The Cobbers had to forfeit at the 133-lb weight class but then freshman Cade Lundeen helped Concordia regain the lead by scoring an 8-7 win at 141. Lundeen did his damage in the second period and then made sure his opponent wouldn't come back in the final minute of the third. The win was Lundeen's first collegiate victory. He is now 1-3 on the year with all three losses coming at the hands of DII wrestlers.

Northern State recorded a pair of decisions and a major decision to take a 16-9 lead before Ian Frenzel took the mat at 174. Frenzel started slowly but then found his groove in the second period and recorded a 7-4 win. Frenzel is now 3-4 in his first college season.

Concordia's final win of the night came at 197 where freshman Gabe Zierden used a strong third period to turn the tables on Wolves' junior Diego Gallegos who beat Zierden in the semifnals of the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open on Saturday. Zierden came away with a 5-3 decision on Wednesday to earn his third win of the year. He is now 3-2.

The Cobbers had a pair of other wrestlers lose by two or fewer points. Freshman Kellen Schauer lost 3-2 at 149 and sophomore Bret Wilson dropped a 7-5 decision at 157.

UP NEXT: Concordia will hit the road for its second multi-team invite of the season. The Cobbers will get their first look at Division III competition when they compete at the Wis.-Eau Claire Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 23 beginning at 9 a.m.
